Gold

Refining Stones
Getting Started:
Refining is one of the most expensive aspects of the game, but also one of the most rewarding in terms of total troop buffs. In fact a very large portion of your total buff is going to be dependent on your Refines. First off, each piece of gear has a different troop stats that it can buff through refines.
Troop Attack is buffed by your Weapon and Ring.
Troop HP is buffed by your Helmet and Legs.
Troop Defense is buffed by your Boots and Armor.
Attack General Refines:
You typically want the Percentage buffs for all pieces on your Attack Generals and not the straight point buff. This is because the points added are added at the end of the equation that calculates your troops stats so they don't get buffed. Therefore the percentage buffs have a larger effect on the high tier troops you are sending to attack people or Bosses.
Wall General Refines:
When defending in your city you would be expected to have a fairly large amount of layers, perhaps millions in layers. Because lower tiers base stats are so low to begin with, the straight point buff added on at the end of the equation can actually be bigger than the percentage stats already calculated. You still want the percentage buffs for your Attack Refines as your higher tiers are still the damage dealers when defending. But you would be recommended picking up at least a couple high (on Achaemenidae gear you can get certain stat point buffs in the area of +3000) straight stat point buffs for Defense and HP.
Doing the Refining:
Now how do you get the best refines in all 4 slots? It's a complicated process that involves spending LOTS of gold and gems. I'm going to be using a fresh unrefined piece of a lower tier gear I just happened to have for my example, but remember you should only be doing this on Dragon Gear or better.
First off you when you go to refine a new piece of gear it will have no existing refines. You will click the refine button and 4 random refines will be generated with the max refine of that buff that you can get on that piece of gear showing up next to it.
You can confirm those refines as a start but they will certainly be replaced when you keep refining and get better buffs. Then you just refine over and over, blowing through all your hard earned gold until you get a percentage buff for the troop type you are focusing that is within a few points of the max for that level of gear.
Once you have confirmed that to replace your old buff you will want to lock it in. When you lock in a buff the refine button at the bottom of the screen will show that it now has a gem cost in addition to the already existent gold cost for future refines. But locking that buff will make it stay while the other buffs reroll when you refine.
DO NOT LOCK BUFFS THAT ARE MORE THAN 5% OFF THE MAX YOU COULD GET.
Locking an "ok" refine (more than 5% lower than the max) reduces the number of chances you get for a good refine on subsequent rolls and wastes gems keeping around a refine that you will have to go back and replace later. Trust me on this one.
The gem cost increases with each additional buff you have locked. You simply repeat the process over and over until you have 4 buffs that are within a few percentage points of the max buff available for that gear. Once you have 4 buffs that are acceptable you can unlock the lowest one and try and get a better buff for that slot, but do not confirm any of the refines until you do get a higher buff so that you don't lose your 4 decent buffs. I also don't recommend trying too hard or wasting too much gold and gems on refining gear until you have Dragon Gear as Dragon Gear has a max buff of 5% higher than King's Gear at 20%. If you can be really patient, wait until you have Ares and Achaemenidae gear before refining as the cost of refining these gears is 200 refine stones. You want to stockpile as many as possible for that point because its very east to go through 50k refines stones really fast.
